Planning Approved for 103-111, Mitcham Road, Tooting, Wandsworth
Criterion Capital is delighted to confirm that planning approval has been granted by the London Borough of Wandsworth for the transformation of the former Morley’s Department Store in Tooting.
This project will repurpose the existing building, retaining its historic character while ushering it into a new chapter of affordable hotel accommodation in line with our pioneering Zedwell hotel portfolio, complemented by vibrant retail and F&B space at street level.
Following Morley’s decision to close and sell the property, we acquired the vacant building and are now reimagining and re-energising this prominent Tooting landmark – creating a destination that blends heritage with contemporary relevance in the centre of town.
– A New Affordable Hotel – Building on the success of our popular Zedwell brand, this site will offer high-quality, affordable accommodation with 92 rooms focused on rest and calm in the heart of Tooting.
– Revitalising a Local Landmark – Reimagining an iconic building without demolition, ensuring its legacy continues while contributing to town-centre vitality and footfall.
– Dynamic Commercial Tenants – Activating the street frontage with high-quality uses that complement the local mix, enhance the public realm and support local businesses.
– Enhanced Safety & Security – A 24/7 on-site hotel presence that bolsters safety, security and stewardship in the area.
– Sustainable Urban Renewal – A reuse-first approach that reduces waste, minimises embodied carbon and aligns with Wandsworth’s ambitions for responsible, low-impact development.
Halima Aziz, Head of Hotels at Criterion Hospitality, commented: “This project embodies our philosophy of thoughtful, adaptive reuse – reimagining a much-loved local building to serve a new purpose for modern audiences. Through this transformation, we continue to expand our hospitality portfolio while contributing to the regeneration, safety and economic vitality of the area. We’re proud to give this historic site a new lease of life and ensure it remains a positive part of Tooting’s urban fabric for future generations.”
