Iconic Horses of Helios installation restored to its former glory by Criterion Capital
We are thrilled to unveil the beautifully restored Horses of Helios at the side of the Criterion Building in Piccadilly Circus, complete with a fully functional fountain!
This ambitious project underscores Criterion Capital’s commitment to activating the public realm and preserving our cultural heritage. We are grateful to Westminster City Council and The Crown Estate for their continued support and we remain dedicated to working closely with local stakeholders to ensure the success of projects that enhance our community.
The restoration, funded by Criterion Capital and carried out with precision and care by Fountains Direct, involved a comprehensive overhaul of the defective electrical and filtration system. The upgrades included new electrical wiring, a control panel, the replacement of a main jet pump, junction boxes, a new filtration system, and UV and chemical treatment, ensuring the fountain meets modern regulations.
Despite encountering unexpected faults that extended the project timeline, the restoration was successfully completed over the course of a year. Jayne Meadows of Bronze Sculpture Surgery meticulously managed the bronze repair and restoration of the iconic Horses of Helios, returning them to their former glory. This project is a testament to our dedication to enhancing the West End and maintaining the rich heritage of our landmarks.
The West End experiences some of the highest footfall in Europe and, as the largest landowner in the Leicester Square-Piccadilly Circus corridor, we take our responsibility to placemaking and stewardship seriously. We are proud to have collaborated with skilled professionals to bring this vision to life and provide a revitalised public space. We will continue to maintain the installation for our community and visitors to enjoy.
Come and experience the renewed grandeur of the Horses of Helios!
