Historic Significance
The history of the Harte and Garter Hotel dates back to the 14th century when the site was home to two illustrious inns: The Garter Inn, named after the Most Noble Order of the Garter established by King Edward III, and The White Harte, named after the Royal Emblem of King Richard II. These inns were central to Windsor’s social life, frequented by both locals and prominent figures of the time. The Garter Inn is notably referenced in William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Following a devastating fire in 1681, both inns were rebuilt and in the late 19th century they were merged to form the Harte and Garter Hotel. The hotel, designed by R. Robson in 1890, reflects the Jacobean style that was popular during the Victorian era, featuring a striking red brick façade, an octagonal corner turret and intricate terracotta details. Over the centuries, the Harte and Garter has witnessed numerous royal events, state visits and historic occasions, cementing its place as a key part of Windsor’s cultural and architectural heritage.
