The Horses of Helios
Criterion Capital recently completed a year long restoration of the iconic Horses of Helios sculpture and fountain in Piccadilly Circus.
Project Overview
Criterion Capital recently completed the ambitious restoration of the iconic Horses of Helios sculpture and fountain, located at the side of the Criterion Building in Piccadilly Circus. This project, which involved a full overhaul of the fountain’s infrastructure and the meticulous restoration of the bronze sculptures, exemplifies our commitment to preserving cultural heritage and enhancing the public realm in the heart of London.
Historical Significance
The Horses of Helios, created by the acclaimed sculptor Rudy Weller and installed in 1992, depict the four majestic steeds of the ancient Greek god Helios – Aethon (“Blazing”), Eous (“He of the Dawn”), Phlegon (“Burning”), and Pyrois (“The Fiery One”). These dynamic figures, captured in mid-stride as they burst forth from water, symbolise the strength and vitality of Helios’s chariot, which was believed to carry the sun across the sky. Over the years, the sculpture has become an iconic part of the West End’s cultural landscape, drawing both locals and tourists to its powerful imagery.

This project reflects our broader mission to activate the public realm, contributing to the cultural and social fabric of London.
