We invite you to celebrate Afternoon Tea Week 2024
This Afternoon Tea Week, we invite you to discover Masala Zone, one of the distinguished commercial tenants nestled in our iconic Criterion Building at Piccadilly Circus.
This Grade II* listed landmark, constructed in 1873 by Spiers & Pond and designed by the acclaimed architect Thomas Verity, stands as a masterpiece of Neo-Byzantine architecture with exquisite interior decor by W. B. Simpson & Sons. Our commitment to preserving London’s rich architectural heritage for future generations is embodied in this historic site, which seamlessly blends the old with the new to create a vibrant space for today’s discerning patrons in one of the highest footfall destinations in Europe.

Masala Zone, from the visionary team behind Chutney Mary and Veeraswamy, presents their exclusive Masala High Chai – a delightful fusion of Indian and British teatime traditions. Guests can savour Monsoon Snacks (Bhajias, Pakoras, Mini Baroda Batata Vadas, Mini Lamb Sliders, innovative finger sandwiches like chicken tikka with Bombay green herb chutney and cheese, along with indulgent sweet treats such as English plum cake, mini Gulab Jamun, and traditional Gujarati Nankhatai biscuits. These delicacies are paired with signature Masala Chai, chilled Thandai, and specialty teas, all served in hand-painted Indian teapots.
The restaurant’s opulent setting, featuring a gold mosaic ceiling, marble walls inlaid with semi-precious stones, and a grand Parisian-style brasserie design, offers an unparalleled dining experience.

Halima Aziz, Head of Hotels at Criterion Hospitality, added, “Celebrated in popular culture as the venue where Doctor Watson first learns of Sherlock Holmes and as a restaurant owned by Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight,” the Criterion Building also holds historical significance as a meeting place for women’s suffrage activists and as the site of the Royal College of Science’s inaugural annual dinner hosted by science fiction pioneer H.G. Wells. We are proud that this illustrious landmark continues to be a beacon of cultural heritage and architectural splendour.”
